In the night of the 18th to 19th of April 2015 an overloaded refugee boat sank on its way from Libya to the European mainland in the Mediterranean Sea and sent around 800 persons to their deaths. As a result, the European borders have once again received ever greater attention in politics and the media. The controversially debated topic presents several challenges for researchers concerned with the borders of Europe.
During this panel discussion, we will therefore discuss the following questions with invited postdocs and additional members of the university: How do we handle the urgency of the topic? How do we position ourselves vis-à-vis current news coverage? How political can we or must we be as scholars? What can scientific research contribute to current political discussions about the external borders of Europe? And what additional value can an academic perspective provide for the debate on European borders?
The event seeks to provide an insight into the challenges of a scholarly engagement with the topic to the external guests as well as to all interested university members.
